The Best Online Tools for Small Businesses & Marketers: 2027 Guide

The old version of this page recommended Google's URL shortener and a couple of keyword tools. That tells you how quickly the internet changes. Today a small business can access analytics, competitive research, AI assistants, design, CRM, automation, video production and even AI-search visibility software that would have required an entire team not long ago.

Researched and refreshed October 9, 2026

The goal here is not to convince you to subscribe to 100 products. It is the opposite: understand what each category does, use the free tools first, and only pay when a tool repeatedly saves time, creates revenue or helps you make better decisions.

Our rule for software: if your team cannot explain the business problem a tool solves in one sentence, do not add it to the stack just because somebody on X called it “game-changing.”

The small-business stack we would build first

Before buying Semrush, an AI visibility suite and seven automation tools, install the measurement foundation. For many small businesses, the first eight tools below create more value than the next 80 combined.

1
Google Analytics 4What people do after they reach your site.
2
Google Search ConsoleHow Google sees the site and which searches create visibility.
3
Google Business ProfileEssential local-business identity, Maps visibility and reviews.
4
Microsoft ClarityFree heatmaps and session recordings to see where users struggle.
5
Looker StudioTurn messy marketing data into dashboards humans can actually read.
6
ChatGPT or ClaudeUse an AI assistant for research, synthesis, drafts and operating leverage—with human review.
7
CanvaGood enough creative production for most small-business day-to-day needs.
8
One serious SEO toolChoose Semrush, Ahrefs, SE Ranking or another suite once free Google data stops being enough.

Our picks by stage

Bootstrapped / just getting started

GA4 + Search Console + Google Business Profile + Clarity + Google Trends + Keyword Planner + Canva + ChatGPT/Claude + Bitly/Rebrandly. You can do a surprising amount before paying for a large martech stack.

Growing small business

Add a serious SEO suite, email/CRM system, call or form attribution where needed, automation, a social scheduling tool and better creative/video workflows. Pay for the bottleneck—not for prestige.

Competitive / multi-channel marketing team

Add dedicated competitive intelligence, AI visibility tracking, reporting connectors, CRO testing, sales intelligence and workflow automation when the data volume and opportunity justify it.

AI visibility, GEO & answer-engine tracking

This category barely existed when the original Online Tools page was created. In 2026 it became its own software market: measure whether ChatGPT, Gemini, Google AI, Perplexity and other systems mention your brand, cite your pages and recommend competitors instead.

New as of October 9, 2026: Profound announced SEO data inside the platform through a Moz partnership, further blurring the line between traditional SEO and AI visibility. That is where we think the tool market is heading: one search-intelligence layer rather than completely separate “SEO” and “GEO” universes.

Marketing School tool index: what Neil Patel & Eric Siu have mentioned

We scanned Marketing School's indexed tool-focused episodes and newer AI discussions to build this cross-reference. The podcast has thousands of episodes, so this is not a claim that we captured every software name ever uttered. It is a practical index of the substantial, verifiable tool mentions we found that are still relevant—or historically useful to understand.

Important: “mentioned” does not mean “currently endorsed.” Some episodes are several years old, products have changed names, and a few tools are no longer the same company/product they were when the episode aired.

Tools from the old internet that need updating

Google URL Shortener (goo.gl)No longer accepts new links. Use Bitly, Rebrandly, Short.io, Dub or TinyURL instead.
Google Data StudioRenamed Looker Studio. Same general reporting category, current Google branding.
Google My BusinessNow Google Business Profile.
Google BardReplaced/rebranded by Gemini.
ConvertKitRebranded as Kit.
IngramerThe social-marketing product later became known as Inflact.

How to choose tools without creating SaaS clutter

  1. Start with the workflow. Write down what you repeatedly do manually.
  2. Measure the problem. How many hours, missed leads or dollars does it cost?
  3. Try the free/native option first. Google, Microsoft and the platforms you already pay for often cover more than people realize.
  4. Choose one system of record. Five dashboards that disagree are worse than one dashboard everyone trusts.
  5. Integrate before adding. A new tool should reduce fragmentation, not create another tab.
  6. Delete ruthlessly. Review subscriptions quarterly and cancel anything the team cannot tie to a workflow or outcome.

Tool collecting is not digital transformation. A disciplined eight-tool stack used deeply will usually outperform a 40-tool stack nobody truly understands.

Frequently asked questions

What are the essential free marketing tools for a small business?

For most businesses, start with Google Analytics 4, Google Search Console, Google Business Profile, Google Trends, Keyword Planner, PageSpeed Insights, Looker Studio and Microsoft Clarity. Add free tiers of Canva and an AI assistant such as ChatGPT or Claude if they improve your workflow.

Should I buy Semrush or Ahrefs?

Both are excellent. Semrush is especially broad across SEO, PPC, competitive research and an expanding AI toolkit. Ahrefs is exceptionally strong for backlink, content and competitive search research and has expanded into Brand Radar. Choose based on the workflows your team will actually use rather than feature-counting.

What tool tracks whether my company appears in ChatGPT?

Dedicated AI visibility platforms now include Profound, Otterly.AI, Peec AI, Scrunch AI and others, while major SEO suites such as Semrush, Ahrefs and SE Ranking are adding their own AI-search measurement. The right choice depends heavily on how many prompts, competitors and AI engines you need to monitor.

What replaced Google's goo.gl URL shortener?

Google no longer offers goo.gl as a product for creating new short links. Popular alternatives include Bitly, Rebrandly, Short.io, Dub and TinyURL. For marketing measurement, add UTM parameters before shortening the URL.

What does the “Marketing School” badge mean?

It means we found the tool mentioned in an indexed episode of Neil Patel and Eric Siu's Marketing School podcast while researching this guide. It does not mean the hosts currently endorse that tool or that Seattle Organic SEO recommends it for every business.

How many marketing tools should a small business use?

There is no ideal number. Start with measurement, local presence, a CRM/email system if needed, creative production and the one acquisition toolset tied to your primary channel. Add software only when it solves a recurring, measurable problem.

Not sure which tools are worth paying for?

Tools should support a strategy—not become the strategy. If you want a second set of eyes on your analytics, SEO stack, local visibility or emerging AI-search presence, start with a free 30-minute audit.
