Well, at least temporarily, the top twitter of them all Lady Gaga who has over 7.2 million followers on twitter is stopping her use of the very popular social microblogging tool. Why? She’s supporting fellow pop superstar Alicia Keys with her charity Child Alive. They are promising to log off twitter until they raise $1 million in funds for the charity which supports kids and families inflicted with AIDS. Basically, they’re forcing the “followers” of their twitter microblogs to “pay up” if they want to continue getting updates and read comments from their twitter accounts.
It will be interesting to see the responses to the twitter ban. First off, twitter (the company, that is) will probably see a huge drop off in traffic. Second, some twitter followers might say “screw this”, but why do I have to support a specific cause? Does it make a person evil to not support a charity they don’t believe in? But most likely, since many of the 7.2+ users of Gaga’s twitter account are what they are called “followers”, they will probably “follow” Gaga’s hopes and use some of their money to support the charity.
I wonder how they find out how to donate since they have no immediate tool to microblog where to go to donate now. I guess they’ll have to rely on old fashioned methods like a website or email.
